For many years, alumnae chapters of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. have realized the importance of the prestige, goodwill, and cooperation of women who, for various reasons, were not members of any Greek-letter organization. Many of these women were of the highest caliber with outstanding religious, educational, civic, and social connections. These women, who were substantial, dependable, and exerted the energy and willingness to render service to humankind and improve their communities were organized into auxiliaries under various names. In 1954, the sorority unified and approved these organized groups and accepted the name, Philo, or friend, as their official name.

The Philos of Alpha Iota Sigma, have contributed countless hours of community service and thousands of dollars to aid Sigma Gamma Rho’s aim to enhance the quality of life within every community.
